With Warner Bros. reportedly deciding to cancel both the New Gods movie from director Ava DuVernay and writer Tom King as well as James Wan's Aquaman spin-off The Trench movie, there's a lot to talk about in today's The Fix: Entertainment! The Hollywood Reporter published an in-depth report on how Warner Bros. is moving forward with DC Films and why they canceled both the New Gods movie and The Trench movie.
The decision to cancel the New Gods movie in particular may rub some DC fans the wrong way. After years of campaigning WB to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, iconic DC villain Darkseid (Ray Porter) finally made his DCEU debut, and the character previously known as Uxas was supposed to be the villain in the upcoming New Gods movie that is now canceled. Allegedly, Warners did not want to use Darkseid again so soon, and that was one of several factors that caused the New Gods movie to be canceled. It likely would have featured other Fourth World DC characters created by Jack Kirby such as Mister Miracle, Big Barda, and Orion. This calls into question exactly what WB is doing with their DC film strategy. Why can there be multiple Batmans (Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, Robert Pattinson), Jokers, Flashes, Cyborgs, Supermans and Lois Lanes but not two instances of Darkseid?
Then there's The Trench movie canceled, which would have been an Aquaman spin-off movie from James Wan about the titular finned monsters that come from the deep, as seen in Arthur Curry's solo movie starring Jason Mamoa. According to THR, The Trench was canceled because it doesn't have enough connective tissue to Aquaman or the greater DCEU.
And in other Entertainment news, Season 2 of the Netflix The Witcher series (starring Henry Cavill) wrapped production on The Witcher season 2. The Witcher Netflix series is on its way to fans, while The Last of Us HBO series is gearing up for a huge shoot. The Last of Us live action series will be coming to HBO, and fans are really looking forward to The Last of Us show.
